In making boat selections, coaches focus on combinations of athletes that will make a boat go fast. Erg scores - for 5k, 2k and max watts - are used as an important indicator of an athlete's ability to move a boat. Rowing technique, coachability and efficiency are other key components. At the coach's discretion, seat racing will be used to clarify boat selection. Attendance also has a direct impact on boat selection.

Rowing lightweight
Coaches may allow some rowers to compete as lightweights, after written permission is received from the athlete's parents and physician. Athlete health and safety, and long-term athletic development, are more important than potential short-term results.
